CARLA BECK’S TEAM CALLS ON MOE, HARRISON TO QUIT YEARS-LONG COVERUP OF MISMANAGED SASKATCHEWAN CROWNS

Sask. Party Deliberately Hid Unprecedented $26-Billion Coal Catastrophe From Public
MEADOW LAKE – Carla Beck’s team is calling on Scott Moe and SaskPower Minister Jeremy Harrison to finally allow Saskatchewan people to get real answers about the state of Saskatchewan’s Crowns following the revelation of their $26-billion coal catastrophe and another call from the Provincial Auditor to be transparent.

On Tuesday, Harrison will release all Crown annual reports, the first release of annual reports since SaskPower leaks caught Moe and Harrison in a ten-fold lie about the real cost of their coal plan. The Standing Committee on Crown and Central Agencies responsible for reviewing those reports and holding the Sask. Party government to account for their management of Crown corporations hasn’t met in over four years.

“There’s a pattern here of trying to bury the numbers and dodge accountability,” said Erika Ritchie, Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Crown and Central Agencies. “They have blocked questions and refused to provide the most basic level of accountability for our most important public assets.

“Scott Moe and Jeremy Harrison act like they answer to no one. They think they can waste and lose billions of dollars of Saskatchewan peoples’ money and never face questions about the consequences.”

The Provincial Auditor has repeatedly urged the government to reconvene the committee to allow the Legislature to “demonstrate appropriate scrutiny and hold agencies accountable.” Instead, Scott Moe is pushing ahead with his disastrous $26-billion coal plan, which will drive up power bills and leave future generations burdened with crippling debt, and lying about the numbers every step of the way.

“We see now why they’ve engaged in such an elaborate cover-up scheme spanning years — it’s so they could pursue an plan that will bury us in generational debt without any public scrutiny,” said Sally Housser, Shadow Minister for SaskEnergy.

“If someone in the private sector lost hundreds of millions of dollars year after year, they’d be fired. The Sask. Party needs to open the books and be truthful with the people of Saskatchewan.”

Carla Beck’s team is demanding that the Sask. Party immediately reconvene the Standing Committee on Crown and Central Agencies and commit to public hearings specifically about their now-exposed coal catastrophe.

“Open the books, answer questions and be transparent with the people of Saskatchewan,” Ritchie said. “Our Crown corporations belong to the people of this province, and the people deserve accountability, not more secrecy.

“It’s time for change.”

Recently, Beck’s team launched OpenTheBooks.ca, a site devoted to exposing Sask. Party corruption, scandal and waste that has defined this government over the last 20 years.
