Leader Speaks Out As Moe’s Close Ally Danielle Smith Targets Immigrants To Cover For Massive Deficit
REGINA – Carla Beck is demanding Scott Moe hold himself accountable for Saskatchewan’s skyrocketing debt and difficult upcoming budget — and she’s seeking a confirmation that he won’t follow the horrible actions of Danielle Smith and target immigrants to cover for his failures.
CARLA BECK DEMANDS SCOTT MOE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR FISCAL DISASTER
“Let’s be really clear — we’re at a critical moment in Saskatchewan,” Beck told reporters during a Tuesday news conference. “A crossroads where the decisions we make will define the future of our province for generations to come.
“Every dollar Scott Moe wastes is a dollar stolen from hospitals, classrooms, public safety, people with disabilities, and more. And, if he holds true to his pattern, Moe will look to blame someone else.
“He’s blamed farmers, wildfire victims, teachers, nurses and more. Next door in Alberta, his buddy Danielle Smith has chosen to blame immigrants — people who are keeping our hospitals and schools and so many of our businesses running.
“This is no way to build a strong growing economy and a strong growing province, to improve healthcare or education. That’s not what I want for Saskatchewan — for Canada.”
Saskatchewan saw its population decline in December for the first time in two decades. The Sask. Party had set a goal of growing the province to 1.4 million people by 2030.
On Monday, Moe warned of a challenging upcoming provincial budget in a radio interview. He initially reported a surplus in last year’s budget but is now cratering towards a deficit of $1 billion or more. The provincial debt is surging to $40 billion — half of which has been racked up during Moe’s time as Premier.
Saskatchewan people are currently paying bankers on Bay Street and Wall Street $1 billion a year just to service the debt.
“We’re heading in the wrong direction,” Beck said. “We see young people leaving, and we see people that come here from other countries move as quickly as they’re able to Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary.
“This has to stop. This is a time to bring people together — to support each other, to lower the cost of living, to deliver big, bold change in healthcare, to make our communities safer and to support young people.
“Frankly, it’s time for change.”
