BECK’S TEAM DEMANDS PASSAGE OF RENT CONTROL BILL BEFORE SITTING ENDS

Average Rent in Saskatchewan On The Rise For 46 Straight Months: Rentals.ca
REGINA — Carla Beck’s team is calling for the immediate passage of The Rent Control Act before the Spring Sitting ends next week, saying Saskatchewan people need relief from rising housing costs before another summer of unaffordable rent increases.

The proposed legislation, introduced by Saskatchewan NDP Housing Shadow Minister April ChiefCalf, would cap annual rent increases at the rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

“Everything is getting more expensive, and too many Saskatchewan people are being stretched to the breaking point just trying to keep a roof over their heads,” said ChiefCalf.

“People are working hard, doing everything right, and still falling behind because rents keep rising faster than their paycheques. Passing rent control before the legislature rises would give families some much-needed stability and breathing room.”

New figures released by Rentals.ca show Saskatchewan recorded the second-highest year-over-year rent increase in Canada, behind only Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, most provinces — along with the national average — saw rents decline.

Over the past three years, Saskatchewan has seen the highest average rent increase in the country, with rents rising 25.9 per cent over that period. Average monthly rent in the province climbed from $1,098 in May 2023 to $1,450 today.

Average rent in Saskatchewan has gone up for 46 straight months.

“Saskatchewan people need action now,” said ChiefCalf.

“We have the opportunity before this sitting ends to deliver real relief — real protection — for renters with The Rent Control Act. Every person deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home.

“It’s time for change.”
