ALZHEIMERS PATIENTS FORCED TO ENDURE TRAUMATIC HOSPITAL HALLWAY STAY IN SASKATOON

Saskatoon Hospitals Continue To See Capacity Issues, Forcing Patients To Be Treated In Hallways
SASKATOON – Carla Beck was joined by the son of an elderly patient who is sounding the alarm about the state of our hospitals after a traumatic 5-day hallway stint at St. Paul’s hospital in Saskatoon.

Last week, Mark Shyluk’s 88-year-old father, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, spent nearly five days at the St. Paul’s hospital following an injury he had sustained. During those five days, Mark’s father was placed in a hospital bed in a busy hallway in the ER because there were no available rooms for him.

“When I arrived to see him, it broke my heart,” said Shyluk. “My dad was in the middle of the chaos—there was constant movement of people, medical equipment, stretchers, cleaning supplies, and visiting family members. There was no peace for patients. Bright lights were a constant.”

The Saskatchewan NDP has raised issue on overcrowding in Saskatoon hospitals for months, with hallway care now appearing to be a regular occurrence at both St. Paul’s Hospital and Royal University Hospital (RUH). Frontline healthcare workers at St. Paul’s have repeatedly raised concerns with the government about overcrowding and the strain it’s placing on both staff and patient care.

“We know that this is a level of care that frontline staff are not satisfied with providing,” said Beck. “Our healthcare system is in a crisis after two decades of this tired and out of touch Sask. Party government, and yet, we continue to see the Health Minister and Premier Moe ignore those who work on the frontlines and recycle the same old healthcare plan from 2009.”

Mark further noted that washroom access was a significant challenge for many of the patients housed in the hallway. He explained that his father, along with other nearby patients, was unable to independently walk to the nearest bathroom. This issue was compounded by the absence of a call button, making it difficult for patients to request assistance when needed.

“There is no road to wellness in a hospital hall,” Shyluk added. “There was no privacy – my father stated that he felt he was in storage area and in the way.”

“Going to the ER can often be a traumatic experience for so many,” said Beck. “Having to see your loved one receiving care in a hallway while they are in such a vulnerable state is difficult.

“Our patients deserve so much better than this. Our frontline healthcare staff deserve so much better than this. It’s time that this government stops pretending that they’re fixing this broken healthcare system and actually get to work.

“It’s time for change.”
