Scott Moe’s Minister Makes Announcements, Has No Delivery As Severe Crime Remains High
SASKATOON — Carla Beck’s team is calling for immediate action from Scott Moe to improve public safety following a series of disturbing bear spray incidents across Saskatoon late last week.
BECK’S TEAM DEMANDS ACTION AFTER STRING OF BEAR SPRAY ATTACKS IN SASKATOON
City police responded to multiple incidents, including an attack on a city bus, an incident involving youth armed with bear spray following victims to a home, and a chaotic scene at a local business where bear spray was discharged indoors and a metal pole was wielded as a weapon.
“After 20 years of the Sask. Party, people don't feel safe anymore in their homes, communities or businesses,” said Hugh Gordon, Associate Community Safety Shadow Minister. “When bear spray is being used on buses, in neighbourhoods, and inside businesses, it’s clear the Sask. Party government does not have a handle on community safety.
“I believe the police and the City of Saskatoon is doing all it can — but they need real support from the provincial government, not more ribbon cuttings and broken promises.”
According to Statistics Canada, severe crime in Saskatchewan is nearly twice the national average and more than two-and-a-half times higher than in provinces like Ontario and Quebec.
The province now has the second-highest homicide rate in Canada, and since Scott Moe became premier, that rate has climbed by nearly 60 per cent.
The Sask. Party’s bad news budget spends three times as much money on servicing the interest on Scott Moe’s massive debt than on policing in Saskatchewan.
“People deserve to feel safe taking transit, walking downtown, or going to work,” Gordon said. This government has been in power for nearly two decades and they need to explain why our communities feel less and less safe.
“It’s time for change.”
