“We are focused on the future,” said Beck, surrounded by fellow MLAs and Prince Albert community members at a Thursday news conference. “A future where every person has a good-paying job, access to quality healthcare and good schools for their kids.
“A future where people feel safe in their homes and to walk the streets of their communities.”
Beck and her colleagues are set to hold important roundtable discussions with Prince Albert economic leaders and public safety representatives later Thursday.
This morning, her team met with City Council. Over the prior two days, Beck and fellow Saskatchewan NDP MLAs attended the Exhibition parade and met with leaders in the city’s Sikh, Hindu and Muslim communities.
“The people here are incredible — full of hope, determination and creative ideas,” Beck said. “They need a government that will harness that energy and deliver on real promises for change.”
Late last month, new Statistics Canada data made it clear that Saskatchewan has the highest rate of severe crime in the country, nearly twice the national average. Severe crime in Prince Albert has risen seven per cent since Scott Moe became Premier in 2018.
“Scott Moe and the Sask. Party have failed to get tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime,” Beck said. “They’re out of ideas, out of touch with reality. When the Sask. Party took office 18 years ago, people felt safe leaving their vehicles and their homes unlocked — but no more.
“That has to change. We need boots on the ground, not more bureaucracy. We need to invest in support agencies who do critical work to save lives and help get people off the streets.”
Beck also said her plans to build big, game-changing infrastructure — rail lines, pipelines and power lines — would benefit the world-class mining and forestry industries in Prince Albert and area. Recent data shows that exports from Saskatchewan to the United States have plummeted amid the ongoing trade war with Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump is a bully and Scott Moe’s plan has basically been to let him steal our lunch money and then offer to make him a sandwich,” Beck said.
“That’s not going to work. We need to fight back against these job-killing tariffs and we need bold action to build a future that we control.”
