“This is a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, as Canada faces an unprecedented challenge to our economic stability and sovereignty,” Beck said. “The imposition of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods is not merely an attack on trade — it is an attack on the jobs, livelihoods, and sovereignty of the Canadian and Saskatchewan people.
“This assault on our economy cannot go unanswered, and it is imperative that we stand united to protect our communities, our workers and their livelihoods.”
Saskatchewan NDP MLAs convened an emergency caucus meeting at the Legislature on Monday to protect Saskatchewan economy. At the meeting, Beck laid out three clear objectives:
-
Protect Saskatchewan jobs and livelihoods, by reconvening the Legislature for an emergency session to respond to President Trump’s tariffs and support Saskatchewan industries.
-
Prioritize buying Saskatchewan, buying Canadian by removing U.S liquor from store shelves, removing inter-provincial trade barriers and prioritizing Saskatchewan/Canadian procurement
-
Bring the message directly to Americans, launching an advertising campaign in key states to Saskatchewan imports and exports, warning American consumers about the risk of higher fuel, energy, and food prices caused by tariffs and the opportunities we share when we work together.
On Sunday, Beck and several Saskatchewan NDP colleagues wrote to Premier Moe calling on him to immediately direct the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority to cease ordering liquor, beer, and wine from the United States.
She also called on the Sask. Party government to do the right thing and fix the regressive, punitive tax on local distillers that’s been hurting economic growth and that’s killed jobs in Saskatchewan. Finally, Beck advocated for a Canada-first procurement policy to be implemented.
“To the people of Saskatchewan, I know the economic uncertainty put upon us by those we considered our closest friends is upsetting. But we must stand together and maintain our resolve and have confidence that we have the strength to overcome this,” said Beck.
“We are ready to stand up for Saskatchewan, to stand up for Canada. To work across provincial borders – and party lines – in defense of something bigger. Our way of life. Our shared values. Our future. Together, there is nothing we can’t overcome.”
