BECK: BUY LOCAL, STOP U.S. BOOZE IF TARIFFS COME TO PASS

REGINA – With Donald Trump planning to impose devastating 25 per cent tariffs on Saskatchewan and Canada in a matter of days, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck is calling for the province to come together and protect Saskatchewan businesses and workers.

Beck called on the provincial government to pull US beer, wine, and liquor from Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority distribution if tariffs are imposed on Tuesday – as Trump has pledged to do multiple times, including again on Thursday.

Beck also encouraged Saskatchewan people to support their neighbours by buying the world-class products made here at home.

She made her announcement at District Brewing, a popular local brewery that uses Canadian crops to make great beer while donating the spent grain to Saskatchewan farmers.

“We make amazing products right here in Saskatchewan,” Beck said. “The American beer just isn’t comparable. Ours is actually beer. We should be supporting our neighbours and local businesses like this any chance we get.

“The United States is an important trading partner and we want to work with them, but we can’t roll over to threats to our economy and our sovereignty. Saskatchewan and Canada will always be first, not 51st.”

In addition to putting Saskatchewan producers, brewers and distillers first, Beck has previously:

  • Called for the Legislature to reopen so the government can respond quickly to tariffs and develop a comprehensive plan to protect our economic future
  • Pushed for massive new investments from federal and provincial governments in rail lines, pipelines, and power lines to reach new markets
  • Called for the twinning of Highway 1 across Canada from coast-to-coast to allow long-haul truckers faster transport of goods without having to cross the border into the US
  • Called for an increase in Saskatchewan steel manufacturing, steel-related jobs and for the government to prioritize contracting Saskatchewan steel providers
  • Launched a "Shop Local, Shop Sask" campaign and website to support local businesses at ShopSK.ca

“When we invest in our own communities, we see a domino effect in our economy. That means more jobs and more successful businesses,” said Beck.

“We know so many Saskatchewan people are already making a conscious effort to shop local, to support Saskatchewan and Canadian-based businesses and products. Now more than ever, we need to stand united and focus on taking control of our economic future.”
