BECK BACKS PRODUCERS AT CROP PRODUCTION SHOW AS TARIFFS THREATEN AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY

SASKATOON – Saskatchewan NDP Leader, Agriculture & Rural Affairs Shadow Minister Carla Beck spoke out against looming 25 per cent tariffs during the annual Western Crop Production Show, warning of their devastating impact on jobs and the cost of living.

“These tariffs will ruin livelihoods, kill jobs, and raise costs for people already struggling to make ends meet on both sides of the border,” said Beck.

“With Ottawa in chaos, leaders at all levels need to step up and make this case to our counterparts down south. This isn't a time for politics.”

During the show, Beck met with producers to hear firsthand about the challenges posed by the potential tariffs.

She emphasized the importance of amplifying their concerns to ensure Saskatchewan’s world-class agricultural sector has a strong voice in all negotiations.

Saskatchewan exported $27 billion worth of goods to the U.S. in 2023 alone. Beck said the tariffs, if implemented, would hammer the agriculture industry and hurt communities on both sides of border.

“The food on your table, the fuel in your vehicle, and the fertilizer that helps crops grow—it’s all from Saskatchewan,” Beck said.  “We have what the United States needs. A trade war is not in anybody’s interest.”
