US trade talks put Saskatchewan jobs at risk, Sask. Party must stand up

With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meeting with President Donald Trump today, the NDP continues to call for assurances that Saskatchewan’s jobs and interests will be protected in all trade and pipeline discussion and is pushing the Sask. Party to do the same.

“The Sask. Party has a track record of walking out on meetings and throwing Twitter tantrums when it comes to dealing with the federal government on issues that relate to the best interests of Saskatchewan people and workers. These tactics have failed Saskatchewan over and over again,” said Warren McCall, the NDP Critic for Trade as well as Jobs, Skills, and Training. “The US President has been clear that his goal is America first. To ensure the best outcomes for Saskatchewan, we need the provincial government to engage the Trudeau government in a meaningful way and work with them to defend Saskatcehwan jobs and industries.”

Recently, McCall wrote a letter to the Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Provincial Minister of the Economy highlighting his concerns about the consequences of President Trump’s memorandum calling for the exclusive use of American steel in current and future pipeline projects. In the letter, McCall urged the Ministers to stand up for Saskatchewan.

“The number of Saskatchewan people looking for work as has more than doubled since the Sask. Party formed government. That’s 43,000 Saskatchewan families who are struggling every day to find work to keep a roof over their heads and food on their table,” McCall said. “Every single MLA needs to make helping Saskatchewan people get back to work their top priority. There are many mortgage-paying jobs in the steel working industry alone that are at risk under the new direction from the American President and we all need to work to protect them.”
