Denare Beach Burned To The Ground One Year Ago Today
SASKATOON – A visibly defiant and annoyed Scott Moe offered no clear timeline for when a review of his disastrous response to last year’s wildfire crisis will finally be made public.
ONE YEAR AFTER COMMUNITY BURNED, SCOTT MOE CAN’T MUSTER A REAL ANSWER ON REVIEW INTO FAILED WILDFIRE RESPONSE
Today marks one full year since Denare Beach burned to the ground. The chaos preceding that disaster and after as people were thrown into chaos during a rapid evacuation has been the subject of constant scrutiny and several independent reviews.
Moe defied calls from so many who lost their homes for a public inquiry into the crisis and instead launched a review from MNP in which he controlled the scope. The firm’s report was to be made public in February. On Monday, four months later, Moe offered no clear timeline for when it would be released.
“When we’re able to make it public, we will,” Moe said first in response to a reporter’s question about the report’s release during an online news conference Monday.
The reporter then asked, “What is the timeline though? Because it was due months ago.”
Moe responded, “That is the timeline — when we can make it available we will.”
“This is a Premier who doesn’t believe he’s accountable to Saskatchewan people — even to those who lost so much during last year’s unprecedented wildfire crisis,” said Carla Beck. “The Premier offers nothing to even hint that he’s learned anything after last year. Let’s be clear, he was in the driver’s seat when we saw mistake after mistake made.
“Sure, he replaced his Community Safety Minister, but not once has he offered an apology for his own hand in all of this. That’s shameful, it’s disrespectful and it’s indicative of a government that’s long past its best-before date.”
Last week, fire threatened communities in the Rural Municipality of Shellbrook and several blazes remain out of control in Saskatchewan. The fires have renewed anxiety for those who lost so much last year.
“I’ve got constituents asking me daily why these guys don’t seem to have learned a damn thing,” said Jordan McPhail, Northern Affairs Shadow Minister. “This is a government focused entirely on making it look like they’re doing something instead of actually doing something.
“Now, because of their inaction and arrogance, so many are going to go sleepless this fire season wondering if this disaster could start all over again.
“That’s not leadership. It’s time for these guys to go. It’s time for change.”
