SCOTT MOE’S BAD NEWS BUDGET CUTS FUNDING FOR NORTHERN HIGHWAYS

Government Leaves Vulnerable Communities Stranded
PRINCE ALBERT - Carla Beck’s team is calling out Scott Moe for slashing critically needed funding for roads in the Saskatchewan’s North in his bad news budget.

“Last year’s wildfire season showed us how critical our highways are; they’re the lifeline of our communities,” said Darcy Warrington, Shadow Minister for Highways & Infrastructure. “We saw thousands of people struggling to evacuate last summer. These roads need to be protected at all costs.”

In Moe’s budget, released last week, funding for Northern Saskatchewan roads will see a cut of $36 million, compared to the previous year (down from $122.3 million to $86.3 million).

“Does Scott Moe think the roads in the North are all fixed now?” said Leroy Laliberte, First Nations & Metis Relations Shadow Minister. “If so, I don’t know who he’s talking to, but it certainly isn’t the people that drive them every day.”

Reduced investment in Saskatchewan’s north will lead to deteriorating road conditions and increased long-term repair costs. Scott Moe’s government touts a new investment into twinning the highway north of Prince Albert, but Laliberte warned this government has a habit of making announcements and offering no follow through.

“They say they’re going to be twinning part of the highway north of Prince Albert, but they are afraid to define what that means — our communities have been promised this highway for decades,” Laliberte said. “This is a government that has routinely shown that they don’t understand or care about northerners.”

Communities like Fond du Lac and Uranium City continue to be inaccessible by road, and many northern communities rely on deteriorating highways as their only way in or out of their communities.

“After last year’s wildfire season, this government could set us on a path to change things for the better by investing in Northern roads,” said Jordan McPhail, Shadow Minister for Northern Affairs. “We hear it every day — after 20 years of the Sask. Party, people in the North feel completely abandoned.

“It’s time for change.”
