SCOTT MOE NEEDS TO TAKE A PAGE OUT OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S BOOK AND PROVIDE GROCERY RELIEF TO SASKATCHEWAN PEOPLE

Scott Moe Should Immediately Cut Tax On Groceries, Kids Clothes And Suspend Fuel Tax
MOOSE JAW – Carla Beck’s team is reiterating their call on Scott Moe to cut the 6 per cent PST on groceries and children’s clothes, and to suspend the fuel tax in light of the federal government releasing its Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit.
“We see other levels of government stepping up to make life more affordable for Saskatchewan families, while Scott Moe sits on his hands and neglects the needs of people barely scraping by,” said Finance Shadow Minister Trent Wotherspoon.

“People are working harder than ever and still can’t get ahead. The federal government is acting to make life more affordable, Scott Moe should be providing cost of living relief to Saskatchewan people too.”

During the Spring Sitting, Beck’s team presented Bill 624 to amend the Provincial Sales Tax Act. The bill, if passed, would permanently remove the PST from groceries and children’s clothes.

“Saskatchewan’s cost of living has gone off the rails, and this government has done nothing to get it back on track,” Wotherspoon said. “People don’t want to hear how good they have it at a ribbon cutting ceremony, they want to feel it in their wallets and see it at the grocery store checkout.”

People in Saskatchewan currently report the highest levels of financial anxiety of anywhere in Canada and Saskatchewan has the highest rate of child poverty in the country — 78,000 children in the province live in poverty.

“Cutting the PST on groceries and children’s clothing would be a step in the right direction and deliver some desperately needed relief to families, instead of sticking families with more taxes and costs as the Sask. Party government has on front after front,” Wotherspoon said.

Wotherspoon also noted that Moe has also refused to remove the tax on gasoline and marked fuel – another action the province could join the federal government in doing to support families, farms, and small businesses.

“Clearly, it's time for change.”
