SCOTT MOE MUST PUBLICLY APOLOGIZE FOR DISASTROUS WILDFIRE RESPONSE, FIRE MINISTER RESPONSIBLE FROM CABINET

Moe Also Caught Lying About When Sask. Party Received Scathing Wildfire Report
SASKATOON – Carla Beck’s team is calling on Scott Moe to issue a formal public apology for a disastrous response to last year’s wildfire crisis, for lying about when he received an independent report into his failures and to, finally, fire the Minister responsible.

The series of calls come in the wake of a damning MNP report released in a Friday news dump, months after it was promised. In a news conference last Monday, Moe claimed the report hadn’t been received yet when asked why it was five months late. Community Safety Minister Michael Weger made it clear Friday that was a lie — stating the report was received 2.5 weeks prior on May 22.

“Scott Moe and his Minister haven’t learned a damn thing,” said Jordan McPhail, Northern Affairs Shadow Minister. “My constituents lost their homes. Entire communities burned to the ground, Denare Beach and East Trout Lake and to this day, no one has been accountable, and these guys have lied and ignored any form of accountability every step of the way.

“Scott Moe should apologize for this disaster and for lying and trying to hide the review into the worst wildfire season in Saskatchewan history. Once he’s done that, he should pair it up with an announcement that Tim McLeod has been fired from Cabinet, once and for all. A minister who has let the people of this province down this bad, should not be in charge of any other ministry”

McLeod was the Community Safety Minister during the wildfire disaster, but was later transitioned to just continuing on as Justice Minister and Government House Leader. He did not lose any salary or status in the Moe Cabinet.
Several sections of the MNP report point to Moe and McLeod’s incompetence, including:

  • “While the SPSA had some foundational planning and structures, it was not fully prepared for a wildfire season of the scale and complexity seen in 2025.” (Page V),

  • “Host communities frequently received little notice of incoming evacuees, leaving communities underprepared and forced into reactive decision-making.” (Page VII)

  • “In doing so, the 2025 Wildfire Season revealed clear opportunities for improvement, many of which reflect latent, preexisting systemic issues that were exposed or intensified by the severity of the season, rather than caused by it.” (Page XI)

  • “Staff observed that some political officials and senior SPSA officials made decisions without fully understanding holistic operational implications.” (Page 47)

  • “PSA staff described extended periods without contact from SPSA Senior Leadership, even while managing active threats with constrained resources.” (Page 53)

  • “Communities further noted infrequent briefings, evolving delegation of authority, and turnover in leadership positions, which at times reduced clarity in roles and decision-making typically expected from a provincial coordinating agency. Interest holders described receiving limited information from SPSA leadership, being directed to public hotlines for updates, and independently mobilizing social supports without provincial coordination.” (Page 53)

“No one was steering the ship while the North burned,” McPhail said. “This report points to a lack of preparation, bad decision-making and missing-in-action leadership at a time when it was needed most.

“If the Sask. Party had actually been doing its job, maybe the people of Denare Beach, East Trout Lake, Sucker River and Hall Lake would not have seen such devastation — maybe some of those homes and livelihoods would have been saved,” said McPhail.

As a Cabinet Minister, McLeod receives a $57,758 increase to his salary.

“This isn’t about politics, it’s about justice for the people who lost everything due to the incompetence of the Sask. Party,” said McPhail.

“Tim McLeod should go. He’s dodged his responsibility for this disaster for too long — it’s time for change.”
