SCOTT MOE, MINISTER REJECT SPECIAL AGRICULTURAL COMMITTEE AMID SOARING COSTS, FARM OWNERSHIP CONCERNS

Major Impact To Producers As Monette Farms Moves To Creditor Protection
REGINA – Scott Moe and the Sask. Party have shot down a call from Carla Beck’s team for a Special Committee of the Legislature to focus on soaring costs for producers, farmland ownership and, specifically, the creditor protection of the Monette mega farm and its impact on producers.

Beck’s Deputy Agriculture Shadow Minister Trent Wotherspoon made the call and offered to work collaboratively to bring together agricultural producers and their organizations at a critical time for the sector.

“Producers are facing serious challenges and agriculture is the backbone of our economy and vital to rural communities,” Wotherspoon said. “They deserve a government that steps up and acts in their interests.”

The call comes as Monette’s mega farm has fallen into deep financial trouble and is currently in creditor protection. The operation has been touted as the future of agriculture by Scott Moe and his Agriculture Minister.

“In addition to the creditor protection of this mega farm, this is also a time where producers are facing skyrocketing input costs — with soaring fertilizer and fuel costs — and challenging commodity prices,” Wotherspoon said.

“All while this government has been lax on illegal foreign ownership and permitting the consolidation of farmland by out-of-province, large investment trusts and funds.”

Wotherspoon asked Moe’s Agriculture Minister Dave Marit to establish the Special Committee during Question Period Wednesday, but his call was ignored.

“This is critical time for producers and agriculture in our province and we should be working directly with them,” Wotherspoon said.

“This Sask. Party government is denying them that opportunity and failing to step up and act in the interests of producers and agriculture.

“It really is time for change.”
