SCOTT MOE BLOCKS MOTION TO SUSPEND FUEL TAX, PAIN AT THE PUMPS WILL CONTINUE

Carla Beck Tries To Cut Struggling Families A Break In Wake Of Bad News Budget
REGINA – Saskatchewan people won’t get a break at the pumps anytime soon as Scott Moe refused to support a legislative motion to temporarily suspend the fuel tax Monday.

The motion, proposed by Shadow Finance Minister Trent Wotherspoon, would have seen the 15-cent-per-litre tax and the marked diesel tax taken off temporarily while the province takes in windfall revenues as a result of the conflict in the Middle East. That conflict has led to a massive price jump of more than 40 cents in Saskatchewan.

On Monday, prices in Regina were 1.64 and 1.74 in Saskatoon.

“We know that Saskatchewan people are experiencing higher financial anxiety than anywhere else in Canada — they simply can’t afford to pay $100 or more to fill up,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader. “As I’ve said, I was so surprised Scott Moe didn’t take this simple step in last week’s bad news budget and temporarily cut the fuel tax.

“Today, we gave him a chance to make it right and he blocked our efforts. How long is this Premier going to sit on his hands while Saskatchewan people drown in debt and have to make impossible choices?”

The motion comes as Scott Moe’s budget will only make things more expensive for Saskatchewan people. After promising not to hike costs, Moe introduced new fees for hunters, fishers and drivers. He’s also continuing to impose a $136-million-per-year hike on power bills after saying no such increase was being contemplated in the Legislature last December.

The budget, introduced last week, has been lambasted by stakeholder groups across Saskatchewan since being introduced Wednesday.

“People aren’t buying what Scott Moe is selling,” Wotherspoon said. “They see right through what’s happening here — this 20-year-old Sask. Party government has wasted so much money and now it’s everyday people that are paying the price when they can least afford it.

“Clearly, it’s time for change.”
