SASKATCHEWAN NDP INTRODUCES BILL TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

New Legislation Would Designate the First Saturday of Every Month As ‘Buy Local Day’

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP has introduced The Buy Local Day Act, a bill that would officially proclaim the first Saturday of each month as “Buy Local Day” in Saskatchewan.

The goal is to encourage people across the province to support local businesses and keep more money circulating in our communities — especially during the current trade war driven by Donald Trump’s tariffs.

“This is a scary time to be a small business owner,” said Aleana Young, Sask. NDP Shadow Minister for Jobs and the Economy. “Trump’s trade war is creating real uncertainty and anxiety for Saskatchewan businesses. Now more than ever, it’s crucial for people to support each other by spending their money right here at home.”

“I hear from people every day who are making the conscious choice to shop locally. We want to keep encouraging this,” Young added. “This bill is about reinforcing that choice and keeping the importance of local spending top of mind.

“Every day should be Buy Local Day, so I would expect all members of this Legislature to support this bill.”

Shadow Finance Minister Trent Wotherspoon echoed the importance of buying local for the health of Saskatchewan communities.

“When you spend money at a local shop, you’re helping your neighbour send their kids to hockey or keep staff employed at your favourite local spot,” said Wotherspoon. “That impact just isn’t the same when you spend it elsewhere.”

To further promote local businesses, the Saskatchewan NDP launched www.shopsk.ca in February — a website where people can nominate and share their favourite local businesses to help them get the recognition and support they deserve.
