Reality Check: NDP calls on Sask. Party to focus on people, not just numbers

NDP Leader Ryan Meili says Sask. Party boasting about population growth doesn’t tell the whole story.

“Bragging about population growth while refusing to fund increasing enrolment in schools shows, yet again, that the Sask. Party is clean out of ideas to make our province better,” Meili said. “Crowded classrooms and crowded emergency rooms are symptoms of how Scott Moe and the Sask. Party are letting people down.”

An increasing number of schools across the province are over capacity, while per student funding has dropped by nearly $400 in the last five years. Overcrowding in emergency rooms leaves many worried about whether they can get the care they need.

Meili also noted that, while the population has grown due to international immigration and the birth rate, Saskatchewan lost thousands of people to other provinces again this quarter.

“These new residents of our province need services, not lip service,” Meili said. “And the fact that thousands of Saskatchewan people are leaving home should raise red flags about whether our economy is working for everyone.”
