Saskatchewan New Democrats call for action to create green jobs, protect Saskatchewan economy

Official Opposition Leader Ryan Meili stood with Energy and Resources Critic Erika Ritchie to address the urgent need for action to protect Saskatchewan’s economy and our environment.

“Our focus must be on good jobs and prosperity for everyone in Saskatchewan. Climate change poses serious economic risks to Saskatchewan, in its effects on agriculture and our lives, and in the threats to an economy dependent on industries that will see their markets changing drastically. With the global economy changing, and the recent Supreme Court decision on carbon pricing, Saskatchewan needs to be at the forefront of climate action and green jobs,” said Meili. “We have the chance right here and now to take serious steps to insulate our economy from future shocks. We need a plan that diversifies our economy and puts us on the cutting edge of sustainable jobs for the future.”

Back to Work: New Democrats call for Sask Jobs Plan

Today, Official Opposition Leader Ryan Meili and Economy and Jobs Critic Aleana Young called on the government to include a robust Sask Jobs Plan in the upcoming budget.

“Budgets are about values, and the investments we make are a reflection of our priorities. Our priority is prosperity, with good jobs for Saskatchewan working people,” said Meili. “Under the Sask. Party, 23,000 people are out of work compared with last year. There’s simply no time to waste, we need investments and a real jobs plan to get Saskatchewan families back to work now.”

Statement by Official Opposition Health Critic Vicki Mowat March 30, 2021

In response to the lack of concrete action in Moose Jaw and area despite concerns over rising COVID-19 variants in the community, NDP Health Critic Vicki Mowat released the following statement.

NDP urges government to use 2 week break to get things right

REGINA – Today Carla Beck, Official Opposition Critic for Education, sounded the alarm on the Sask. Party government’s chaotic handling of COVID-19 in schools with COVID-19 variants on the rise, particularly in Regina and area. With an average of nearly 6 outbreaks a day reported over the last two weeks, the situation has clearly spiralled out of control.

“Parents, divisions and school staff are concerned. They want answers but unfortunately, Premier Moe and his government have been asleep at the wheel,” said Beck. “The fact is that the province’s entire plan for COVID-19 has been chaotic from the start - and now schools, families and communities are paying the price.”

Statement by Official Opposition Agriculture Critic Trent Wotherspoon on Reference Margin Limit victory for producers

The statement reads as follow:

“Saskatchewan New Democrats are pleased that the Sask. Party government has finally agreed to one half of what we have called for along with producers from across Saskatchewan to fix AgriStability. Removing the Reference Margin Limit will come as a relief to many farm families and provide much needed certainty, particularly livestock producers that have been hard hit.

While this is a positive development, we know that Saskatchewan producers are united in calling on the Sask. Party government to finish the job and repair AgriStability which was damaged by the 2013 cuts.

Statement by Official Opposition Leader Ryan Meili in response to Carbon Tax decision

In response to the decision by the Supreme Court ruling the federal Carbox Tax constitutional, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Ryan Meili released the following statement:

"The Saskatchewan NDP Caucus is focused on creating good jobs here in Saskatchewan, and prosperity for our province’s  families and businesses.Today’s ruling means that Trudeau’s economy-wide carbon tax will continue to take more from the people of Saskatchewan than they get back, with people living in rural and remote areas being most affected. That’s not right. 

This economy-wide price on carbon is not something that Saskatchewan people, or the Saskatchewan NDP support. Scott Moe chose to maintain the Trudeau carbon tax for two whole years instead of trying to negotiate a better deal.
