LATEST SASK PARTY REPORT: NEW STUDENTS UP 15,000 AND TEACHERS DOWN

REGINA – Since 2020, the number of students in Saskatchewan's education system has increased by over 15,000, while the total number of teachers has actually decreased.

“This is unacceptable,” said Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck.

“A good education for our kids should be a priority. They only get one shot at a good start in life.”

According to the Sask. Party government’s most recent annual Education Staffing Sector Report, obtained by the Saskatchewan NDP through a Freedom of Information request, there are 86.3 fewer classroom and distance learning teachers working today than in 2020.

Over the same time period, student enrollment has increased by 12,869 – 15,594 if Sask. DLC students are included.

“Teachers tell us they feel burnt out and ignored, and some parents are even considering leaving the province to get their kids the supports they need,” said Matt Love, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Education Minister.

“Saskatchewan has so much potential and we shouldn’t be ranked last place in Canada for education.”

The Sask. Party’s cuts to per-student funding have contributed to overcrowding in Saskatchewan’s classrooms.

Saskatchewan used to lead the country in per-student funding, but now ranks last place in Canada.
