FRANCOPHONE SCHOOL IN PONTEIX FALLING APART, SASKBUILDS MINISTER IGNORES PLEAS FOR HELP

Saskatchewan NDP Calls For Better Upkeep Of Much-Needed Schools

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is demanding urgent action to fix an aging Francophone school in Ponteix, where students are currently using a hallway as a gym and are crammed into undersized classrooms, and where there is no properly functioning library.

Families with children attending the school say they’ve been pleading with local MLA and SaskBuilds Minister David Marit for years to meet with the community and take a tour of the crumbling school, but he has ignored those calls.

“The Minister should be ashamed himself — ignoring his own constituents and students, our province’s future,” said Jacqueline Roy, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Francophone Affairs. “The Francophone students in Ponteix deserve a good school where they can receive a quality education. Instead? Dave Marit won’t even hear out the very serious concerns from the community.”

On Monday, representatives involved with the Ponteix school attended the Saskatchewan Legislature seeking action. Students attending the school are using a hallway with broken gym mats as their gymnasium, the school’s library is overflowing and falling apart, with books in baskets on the floor, and students have been forced to study in classrooms that are so small they can hardly move around.

“People across Saskatchewan have been calling on this government to invest in classrooms,” said Matt Love, Shadow Minister. “The state of the Ponteix school is atrocious and the Minister should be embarrassed.

"The incredible teachers in Ponteix are truly creating something out of nothing for their students, but it does not need to be this way.”
