CARLA BECK’S TEAM STANDS WITH NURSES IN URGING THE SASK. PARTY GOVERNMENT TO TAKE ACTION ON THE HEALTHCARE CRISIS

Frontline LPNs Warn That Burnout and Short Staffing Are Driving Workers Away
REGINA – Today, Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Health, joined frontline nurses and CUPE 5430 President Bashir Jalloh to highlight the growing retention crisis in Saskatchewan and to call on the provincial government to address the conditions driving experienced healthcare providers out of the province and profession.

Jalloh emphasized that one of the most serious challenges facing Saskatchewan’s healthcare system is the growing number of nurses and healthcare providers leaving the province due to low wages, heavy workloads, and chronic short staffing.

“I didn’t become a nurse to spend my career fighting for basic resources. I became a nurse to care for people—I don’t want to leave nursing,” said Darla Rugland, who stood alongside Sandee Michalchuk, both frontline LPNs with extensive experience in Saskatchewan’s healthcare system.

The Saskatchewan Nurse Retention Forum, held yesterday in Regina, brought together nurses, healthcare leaders, unions, and advocates to discuss solutions to the ongoing retention crisis.

“We’re hearing from healthcare providers that they love their work and they love their patients. They want to stay in Saskatchewan. They want to stay in healthcare,” said Conway. “But the conditions of work have left them increasingly burnt out and exhausted — they’re facing short staffing, rising workloads, and a system that leaves them feeling unheard, unsupported, and undervalued.”

Over recent months, Carla Beck’s team has travelled across the province as part of the Your Care, Your Say healthcare consultation, speaking with patients, families, providers, community leaders, and healthcare organizations about the challenges facing the system and the solutions needed to fix it.

Conway says this theme has come up repeatedly, and she urged the government to act on the retention crisis.

“What we heard from these frontline nurses – who between them have over sixty years of experience – is consistent with what we’ve heard from healthcare providers and workers across the province,” said Conway. “The Sask. Party must stop treating retention as an after-thought, or they will continue to drive our valued healthcare workers out of the province and the profession. It’s time for change.”
