On Monday, pharmacies across Saskatchewan reported errors, outages and other issues that prevented many from filling prescriptions. One pharmacy in Saskatoon even urged patients to wait on refilling their orders until the system was restored. It was the latest in a seemingly neverending series of healthcare failures in a system in worse shape than ever after 20 years of the Sask. Party.
"Every single day, Scott Moe and Jeremy Cockrill are failing the people of this province, and undermining the healthcare Saskatchewan relies on," said Keith Jorgenson, Associate Shadow Minister of Health. "To essentially cut people of from their prescriptions, without warning, and leave it up to pharmacies and pharmacists to manage the fallout from Cockrill's mismanagement is just shameful and cowardly."
Despite the clear issues impacting thousands of patients, no news release, public alert or update was issued by Cockrill, the Saskatchewan Health Authority or Saskatchewan eHealth to those affected.
Jorgenson said Monday’s outage and failure by the government to respond is much more concerning, given that the Provincial Auditor has called previously warned that eHealth's failures in its master service agreement posed risks when it came to Disaster Recovery, Service Levels and IT Change Management. The Auditor even warned in 2024 that, as a result, "Changes to IT systems may be inappropriately executed, increasing the risk of an adverse effect on the integrity and availability of IT systems and data."
“This is a do-nothing, missing-in-action government that spends its days flying around on private jets and pandering to their friends and insiders while everyday people suffer,” Jorgenson said. “Clearly, it’s time for change.”
In just the last two weeks, healthcare workers have voted in favour of the largest strike in Saskatchewan history, a Saskatoon woman’s family went public after she died of a broken ankle and complications from a surgery delay, another family spoke out after a woman and one of her twin babies died after being turned away from a hospital, and a photo surfaced of a dementia patient in his 70s being forced to lie on the emergency room floor because there were no available beds.
