SCOTT MOE REFUSES TO CUT PROVINCIAL GAS TAX AS FEDS SCRAP THEIRS

Moe Needs To Provide Temporary Relief While Drivers Get Hit With $1.70/L Gas Prices.
REGINA – Scott Moe has again blocked a motion from Carla Beck’s team to suspend the provincial fuel tax, even as the federal government has announced it is providing relief at the pumps all the way to Labour Day.

“For weeks, we have called on Moe to suspend the tax,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP leader. “People cannot afford to keep taking these hits on top of his senseless power rate hikes, taxes on groceries, and taxes on kid's clothes.”

Beck said entirely suspending the gas tax on top of federal relief would save Saskatchewan drivers 25 cents per litre. Her Finance Shadow Minister Trent Wotherspoon moved a motion to cut the gas tax in the Legislature Tuesday, but it was promptly shutdown.

“This makes all the difference for people in this province — saving people a quarter of their gas bill goes a long way in trying to keep up at the grocery store and paying their power bills,” said Beck.

“Suspending the tax would show some decency and compassion for the insurmountable affordability struggle that people in this province are facing.

“Saskatchewan people rely on their vehicles to go to work, to pick up their kids, go to the doctor, and so much more.

“Scott Moe is preying on their need for a vehicle and trying to make a quick buck off them every which way he can imagine. This is wrong and, clearly, it’s time for change.”
