SASKATCHEWAN SAW MASSIVE RENT INCREASE IN 2025, MOE REFUSES TO ACT

Sask. Party Ignore Repeated Calls To Pass NDP’s Rent Control Act
SASKATOON – Saskatchewan saw sky-high rent in 2025, according to new data, while Scott Moe and the Sask. Party refused to act and worked only to protect their corporate landlord buddies.

Rentals.ca reported a 9.3 per cent increase in rent for Saskatchewan last year alone and a cumulative increase of 16 per cent over the last three years, while rent decreased almost everywhere else in Canada.

“Not only is the cost of rent increasing in Saskatchewan, but it’s actually picking up speed while people suffer,” said April ChiefCalf, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Housing Minister.

“No wonder people are leaving Saskatchewan — they can’t afford to stay.”

Rent increased in 2025 by nearly seven per cent for single bedroom units, over seven per cent for two-bedroom units, and nearly nine per cent for 3-bedroom units. The same Rentals.ca data reveals that nearly every province and territory in Canada with Rent Control has seen rent fall or stay the same.

Earlier this month, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck demanded an emergency legislative session to pass the Rent Control Act introduced by ChiefCalf during the Fall Sitting. The legislation, if passed, would cap rent increases at the rate of inflation.

“We have a solution to this rent problem and we could put it into action in a single day,” ChiefCalf said. “People in Saskatchewan are working so hard and they’re falling farther behind. They deserve a government that cares about them, not serving corporate landlords who are buying up property across Saskatchewan and jacking up their rents with little or no notice.”

New data from Statistics Canada released last week reported nearly 47 per cent of Saskatchewan people find it difficult or very difficult to meet their financial needs — the data was from the second quarter of 2025 and marked a drastic increase from the 31 per cent reported in the first quarter. No other province reported as high of financial anxiety.

“Rent, power bills, car insurance, groceries — everything just keeps going up and up,” ChiefCalf said. “We need rent control and we need to put a stop to Scott Moe’s cost hikes.

“We need action now. It’s time for change.”
