Family Saddled With Costly Ambulance Bill After Capacity Pressures Force Care Outside Their Community
BIGGAR - Carla Beck’s team is calling on the provincial government to explain how their ongoing neglect of Saskatchewan’s healthcare system has caused a Biggar family to pick up an ambulance bill of more than $1,300 after their child required emergency care hours away in Prince Albert.

After receiving care in Biggar, Amy Haynes’ child needed to be transported by ambulance for further treatment. The family was told there was no room or appropriate care available in Saskatoon, North Battleford or even as far away as Swift Current.

As a result, an ambulance was required to transport the child all the way from Biggar to Prince Albert. Now, Amy and her spouse Dylan Haynes have received a bill of more than $1,300 for that ambulance trip — a cost they never could have anticipated when seeking emergency medical care for their child.

“Imagine being a parent, watching your child need urgent medical attention, and being told the care they need isn’t available anywhere close to home,” said Keith Jorgenson, Associate Shadow Minister of Health. “Amy did what any parent would do—she took her child elsewhere to receive the care they needed. This family should not be punished with a $1,300 bill because this Sask. Party government has left patients with no reasonable access to the care they need.”

Jorgenson says this case raises serious questions about the impact of hospital capacity pressures on patients and families across the province.

“The Haynes' story is about more than one bill. It is about what happens when families cannot access care close to home,” said Keith Jorgenson. “Saskatchewan families deserve a healthcare system that is there when they need it, without leaving them to pay the price for Scott Moe’s failures.”
