NEW DATA SHOWS THAT SASKATCHEWAN HAS THE HIGHEST CHILD FOOD BANK USAGE IN CANADA

Beck Commits To School Nutrition Program, Doing All She Can To End Child Poverty
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team is sounding the alarms on new data showing more children in Saskatchewan are forced to rely on the food bank than anywhere else in Canada.

The Food Bank Canada data shows that Saskatchewan children have accessed food banks more than 24,000 times this year — 38.8 per cent of all visits. Child poverty in Saskatchewan is the highest in the nation. Food Bank Canada reporting says that visits are up by 11.8 per cent since last year. Many food banks, particularly in smaller communities, have reported that they cannot keep up with the demand.

“These are children. And they are going hungry,” Beck said. “In a province known for feeding the world, surely we can make sure our own children are fed.”

Public polling has constantly showed Saskatchewan residents report greater financial insecurity than anywhere else in Canada as well.

“Scott Moe spends his days telling people how affordable life is here,” Beck said. “His Ministers and MLAs fly around on private jets while families struggle to make ends meet on the ground. Clearly, this Premier is at the helm of an arrogant, entitled and out-of-touch government that has been in power for far too long.”

Beck recently wrote to every school board in the province committing that, should her team form the next Saskatchewan government, she would provide funding and support for a provincewide school nutrition program.

“The school nutrition program is just the first step, a critical one,” Beck said. “Should we form the next provincial government, our team will do everything in our power to end child poverty in Saskatchewan.

“Better is not only possible here, it’s on the way.”
