MOE GOVERNMENT RAMS THROUGH BILL 48 AFTER BLOCKING 17 OPPOSITION AMENDMENTS

REGINA – Carla Beck’s team voted against Bill 48 at third reading today after Scott Moe’s Sask. Party government rejected 17 proposed amendments aimed at strengthening the deeply flawed legislation.

The amendments sought to address critical gaps in Bill 48, including ensuring that individuals voluntarily seeking treatment for substance use are not displaced by those entering treatment involuntarily. The Premier recently admitted in question period that the province’s treatment beds are “largely full”.

“Moe’s government has pushed through deeply flawed legislation while completely ignoring these practical, life-saving improvements and failing to invest in more beds,” said Beck. “We know people are waiting six weeks or more to access care. People will die waiting to save themselves.”

At committee, the Opposition also raised serious concerns about the government’s refusal to provide transparency and accountability around its partnership with Edgewood Health Network, a for-profit, out-of-province company. EHN’s CEO has preached a business model of speed and compares his business strategy to aerial combat in the Korean war.

“This government refused even basic scrutiny of the contracts and operations of a private provider they are relying on to deliver care,” said Nicole Sarauer, Shadow Minister for Justice. “Saskatchewan people deserve to know how their public dollars are being spent and whether patients will receive safe, effective treatment.”

The Sask. Party also rejected amendments that would have guaranteed access to legal representation throughout the legal process for patients as well as a requirement that there be an Indigenous person on hearing and review panels where the patient is of Indigenous ancestry.

“This Bill is deeply flawed and won’t reverse years of Sask. Party inaction on the addictions crisis,” added Sarauer. “After 20 years of the Sask. Party, it’s time for a change.”
