YORKTON HOSPITAL DESIGN DONE 14 YEARS AGO, SCOTT MOE MOVES CRITICAL PROJECT BACK TO ‘PRE-DESIGN’ PHASE
Moe’s SaskBuilds Minister Sean Wilson also said in Question Period on March 5 that the hospital was in “pre-design.”
But a news article from SaskToday on February 1, 2012, notes that final conceptual plans were presented at public meetings the week prior. The news article even includes a preliminary design for the ground floor of the Yorkton Hospital — Cannon Design was hired on by the Sunrise Health Region to do the design work for the Yorkton hospital and another in Canora.
“The Sask. Party has had the designs for a new, desperately needed hospital in Yorkton for 14 years and, still, they play political games while patient care suffers,” said Jared Clarke, Rural & Remote Health Shadow Minister. “We know this hospital has been needed for two decades and it now seems farther away from completion than ever.
“What exactly does ‘pre-design’ mean? Clearly Scott Moe and the Sask. Party don’t give a damn about the people of Yorkton and delivering them the healthcare they deserve.”
Carla Beck’s team has committed to prioritizing the start of construction of the Yorkton Hospital in the first year of forming government.
In justifying the need for a new hospital back in 2012, Cannon’s representatives declared the existing Yorkton hospital as “functionally obsolete,” due to undersized rooms, inefficient floor plans and a lack of adequate support and storage space. It was said at the time that a new hospital could be built in four years.
“Pre-design is nothing more than an attempt to make it look like you’re doing something when you’re actually doing nothing,” Clarke said. “Saskatchewan healthcare is in worse shape than ever — Scott Moe and the Sask. Party broke it and can’t be trusted to fix it.
“Clearly, it’s time for change.”
