Local MLA Refuses to Act as Critically Ill Senior and His Belongings Carted Onto Street

REGINA — Weyburn resident Teresa Sandeski travelled to the Saskatchewan Legislature today demanding answers from the Sask. Party government after her husband, Fred Sandeski, was wrongfully evicted from the Weyburn Care Home.

“Fred Sandeski has devoted most of his life to giving back to his community — he represents the very best our province has to offer,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader.

“Now the Sask. Party has kicked him out to the curb. This cruel and callous decision comes from a government that clearly has forgotten about the people it is elected to represent.

“The Saskatchewan NDP and many others in our province are standing with the Sandeskis and we won’t let up until Fred has a roof over his head and is able to receive the care he needs.”

Teresa, who herself is confined to a wheelchair, says local Sask. Party MLA Michael Weger previously told her family that he wanted to help but said his colleagues at the cabinet table simply will not budge.

”Even the Sask. Party’s own MLA for Weyburn knows evicting Fred Sandeski is horrific — still he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with them and does nothing to help,” said Keith Jorgenson, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Seniors.

“Seniors, who very clearly need around-the-clock-care, should not have to beg and plead just to live out their final days with dignity.”

The Sask. Party government says that Fred was evicted because he is not sick enough to qualify for care.

He has late-stage COPD, congenital heart failure, epilepsy, blindness, diabetes, celiac disease and requires constant attention, which can no longer be provided by Teresa due to her own health needs.

Police officers were called to oversee the eviction and remove Fred’s belongings yesterday. Friends and supporters gathered outside the care home in protest.

At approximately that time, MLA Weger was reading a poem he wrote in the Legislature.

The Saskatchewan NDP is calling for the immediate reversal of Fred Sandeski’s eviction, a full review of eligibility rules, and accountability from MLAs like Michael Weger who refuse to stand up for the people they were elected to represent.
