TOTAL NUMBER OF SMALL, MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES DECLINING IN SASKATCHEWAN UNDER SCOTT MOE

CFIB Report Says Saskatchewan Experiencing ‘Entrepreneurial Drought’
REGINA – A new report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says that the Saskatchewan economy is going in the wrong direction — and Scott Moe doesn’t seem to have a clue on how to get things back on track.

The CFIB says that Saskatchewan is currently experiencing an “entrepreneurial drought,” with the total number of small and medium sized businesses operations actually declining every quarter for the last four quarters.

“This is clear evidence that, while Scott Moe insists everything is going just fine, business owners in Saskatchewan are really struggling,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader. “Saskatchewan has so much potential but this Sask. Party government just keeps jacking up costs and failing to create the conditions to allow businesses to succeed.”

Saskatchewan saw a net decline of 42 businesses last quarter (Q2 2025), according to the CFIB. The quarter before that was even worse with a net decrease of 172 businesses.

Under the Sask. Party, 53.1 per cent of Saskatchewan businesses said they would not advise someone to start a business right now, citing high costs and economic uncertainty.

A whopping 41 per cent of Saskatchewan’s small firms said they feel unsupported by the provincial government, and only 8% strongly believe the Saskatchewan government has a clear vision for entrepreneurship.

The last time business exits exceeded business entries for four consecutive quarters in Saskatchewan was the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The numbers don’t lie,” said Aleana Young, Jobs & Economy Shadow Minister. “They very clearly show that Scott Moe and his Minister are asleep at the wheel when job creators in this province need a true partner in their government.”

“And things are only going to get worse once the second surprise power rate hike is introduced,” Young added.

“Stop the rate hikes. It’s time for change.”

Carla Beck’s team has put forward a Grid & Growth Plan to keep power affordable for businesses and families, drive investment, and generate $33 billion in economic activity.

The plan can be reviewed at GridandGrowth.ca.
