TIME RUNS OUT FOR 79 WORKERS AS SASK. PARTY’S BROKEN PROMISE LEADS TO LAYOFFS

Recent court documents revealed Scott Moe at the heart of Shercom controversy

SASKATOON – Today, 79 manufacturing workers at a Saskatoon-based tire recycling business will lose their jobs after the Sask. Party gave their contract to a California company,  breaking a promise made by Sask. Party Leader Scott Moe.

Shercom first gave notice of potential layoffs in an Oct. 23 letter, calling on the Sask. Party to reverse their decision and save the workers, some of whom have relied on the company for decades.

“These broken promises have 79 families getting pink slips for Christmas,” said Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Jobs and the Economy.

“How are we supposed to attract investment into Saskatchewan when you have a Sask. Party government breaking their promises to investors resulting in massive layoffs?”

According to official court filings, on March 22, 2017, then-Environment Minister Scott Moe personally met with Shercom leadership and promised the company a long-term contract, assurances of supply of used tires, and a voice in the future of the tire recycling industry.

However, after becoming Premier, Moe and the Sask. Party broke their promise and awarded Shercom’s contract to California-based CRM, which hired former Sask. Party Finance Minister Kevin Doherty to lobby the Sask. Party government.

“Investors in Saskatchewan need confidence that when a government makes a promise, they aren’t going to break it in a year or two,” Young said. “Saskatchewan should be a profitable and stable environment to build your business. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case under the Sask. Party.”
