STATEMENT FROM SASKATCHEWAN NDP LEADER CARLA BECK ON RENT CONTROL

When Scott Moe addresses the cameras this morning in Saskatoon, he needs to explain to Saskatchewan renters – all 300,000 of them – why he’s siding with the big corporate landlords like Boardwalk when it comes to rent control.
Right now, big corporate landlords from Alberta can jack up rents on Saskatchewan seniors and young people by 20, even 30 per cent in a year, and they are making record profits.
Without rent control, Saskatchewan is like the wild west of big corporate landlords.
This is no way to build a bright future for this province, and this needs to stop.
Scott Moe’s Sask. Party government needs to finally agree to passing our Rent Control Act — by now, they should have had time to review the bill and form a position on it.
If they don't pass this bill, it will be entirely their fault when rents are jacked up next year by 20, 30, even 40 per cent on our seniors and young people.
People will remember that Scott Moe and the Sask. Party had the chance to get tough on the big corporate landlords and chose not to.
That will be this Premier’s legacy.
