STATEMENT FROM SASKATCHEWAN NDP LEADER CARLA BECK ON PREMIER MOE’S LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER CARNEY

The carbon tax, tariffs, and the lack of trade enabling-infrastructure like pipelines are huge issues that we need action on, there’s zero doubt about that. I agree with the Premier and appreciate that he has joined me in raising these issues with Mr. Carney.

However, it’s unfortunate that the Premier seems to have given up on fighting for action on so many other key federal issues that matter to Saskatchewan. On equalization, Saskatchewan deserves a fair deal, especially after the Sask. Party backed down from this fight in 2008. It’s hard to tell where the Premier stands on this issue given his party’s record and he should have taken a strong stance on equalization in this letter.

The same goes for childcare. Our province stands to lose hundreds of jobs because the Sask. Party is one of only two governments that still hasn’t signed on to a renewed agreement with the federal government. Moms and dads can't go to work in the hospital or the potash mine if no one is there to watch their kids.

The time is now to focus on the future of our province and our nation.
