STATEMENT FROM SASKATCHEWAN NDP LEADER CARLA BECK ON POTASH TARIFFS

Donald Trump’s threat of very severe tariffs on Saskatchewan’s potash is going to add further economic stress, pain and suffering at a time when we can least afford it.

It’s clear that Scott Moe’s buddy-buddy meetings with senior Trump advisers as recently as two weeks ago has had little to no effect. He continues to play nice while Saskatchewan workers get screwed by multiple tariffs targeting several critical economic sectors.
The United States currently buys half of our Canadian potash exports — clearly we cannot rely on such an unreliable trading partner. We can no longer rely on a single trading partner for such a large and critical piece of the Saskatchewan economy.
We need new infrastructure to get our products to new markets in Europe and Asia. We know that Scott Moe has failed to get Saskatchewan’s fair share of the initial projects approved by the Carney Federal Government.
And we cannot sit on our hands — as Moe has done — while a new potash export terminal is built in a country that continues to threaten our most critical industry.
It’s time to act. Strength respects strength.

If we can demonstrate that we’re serious about reducing our reliance on one trading partner, it will improve our bargaining position on any future trade talks.
Saskatchewan people are hardworking, self-reliant and ambitious — we deserve a government that is the same, especially at such a critical moment for this incredible place we call home.
