Statement from Official Opposition Leader Ryan Meili in response to Premier Moe’s COVID press conference

For immediate release: October 7, 2021

Saskatchewan leads all provinces in COVID case rates and death rates. One in seven deaths in this pandemic have occurred in the last month. We are one of two provinces without gathering restrictions leading into this Thanksgiving long weekend. And today, we will once again break new COVID records, as we’ve been doing all week

We cannot let ourselves be desensitized to these numbers. This is not normal. It was entirely preventable. There are two provinces that are currently facing COVID health crises. Scott Moe and Jason Kenney put politics above people’s health. It did not have to be this way.

This government clearly recognizes the need to bench Paul Merriman for his absolutely failed response to the pandemic.

However, shifting responsibility for COVID-19 from one bureaucracy to another won’t do anything to add nurses and doctors to our overstretched ICUs. Scott Moe needed to ask for federal supports weeks ago and should have implemented evidence-based public health measures to protect Saskatchewan families this weekend. He should have announced this today.

The people of Saskatchewan deserve so much better.
