Statement by the Official Opposition Health Critic Danielle Chartier on the government’s announcement regarding mental health care

“New Democrats have long called for the Sask. Party to take the necessary action to address the challenges that countless families face when it comes to getting proper mental health supports for their loved ones.

“We are encouraged that the government has finally taken action to move forward with the temporary Mental Health Assessment Unit at the Royal University Hospital. Full credit goes to the many families who showed the courage to advocate for change to help the Sask. Party finally see the light, even though its own mental health report highlighted the need for this kind of facility.

“The work to help those facing mental health challenges does not stop with this announcement of a temporary fix. The Sask. Party’s abysmal record on mental health still leaves Saskatchewan below the national average on mental health spending. We will continue to work alongside families and other advocates to push the Sask. Party to implement long-term solutions.”
