SCOTT MOE SHOULD GREENLIGHT IMMEDIATE PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION REQUIRING REAL-TIME REPORTING OF EMERGENCY ROOM CLOSURES

Critical Bill From Beck’s Team Passed Key Hurdle Last Week
REGINA — Today, in Question Period, Carla Beck’s team will call on Scott Moe and the Sask. Party to immediately pass legislation requiring lifesaving real-time reporting of emergency room closures.

The call to pass Bill 606, The Provincial Health Authority (ER Closure Right-to-Know) Amendment Act, comes after Moe and numerous Sask. Party MLAs supported the bill, introduced by Rural and Remote Health Shadow Minister Jared Clarke, at second reading on Thursday. Moe’s Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill rejected the need for the legislation during Question Period Thursday and wasn’t present for the vote later in proceedings.

“This is a leadership moment,” Clarke said. “Rural healthcare is a disaster right now in Saskatchewan after 20 years of failure by this government. The least we can do is tell people whether their local emergency room is open or closed.”

If the bill passes through committee and is supported at third reading, it would require an emergency room closure anywhere in Saskatchewan to be reported publicly through a website or other electronic means within one hour of a shutdown.

“We know this legislation will save lives,” Clarke said. “In the event of a medical emergency, seconds can be the difference between life and death. Too often, people are turning up in medical distress to an emergency room to find a closed sign on the door.

“That’s not right.”

On Thursday, Cockrill claimed the Sask. Party was focused on keeping emergency rooms open; however, Beck’s team logged literally hundreds of rural emergency room closures in 2025 alone.

“The only reason I can fathom as to why Scott Moe would stall passage of my legislation and continue to hide such critical information about emergency room closures is that they don’t want us to see just how badly they’re failing to deliver healthcare in rural Saskatchewan,” Clarke said.

“People deserve to know this critical information in the event of an emergency. They deserve to know if their local ER is open or closed.

“The bottom line is healthcare in this province is crumbling all around us — it’s never been in worse shape — and the least the Sask. Party government can do is be transparent.”

Carla Beck's team continues to consult on major changes needed to deliver big, bold change in healthcare. People can share input and ideas at YourCareYourSay.ca.
