SCOTT MOE SHIPS MORE PUBLIC MONEY TO PRIVATE SCHOOL CHARGING SKY-HIGH TUITION, REFUSES TO SUPPORT OVERRUN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

School Nutrition Funding For Public Schools The Lowest In Canada, Literacy Rates Dropping
SASKATOON—With $2 million in public funding going to a private school in Saskatoon, Carla Beck’s team is wondering if Education Minister Everett Hindley is up to the job of running the province’s schools.

The government announced this week that Roadways Literacy Academy will receive $403,000 in funding this school year, an increase of $175,000, as well as up to $1.56 million in additional funding through March 2029 for educational programming and specialized literacy services.

Roadways is an alternative independent school and families whose children attend the school already pay thousands of dollars each year in tuition.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and succeed, and that starts with having their basic needs met,” said Matt Love. “School divisions and educators are doing everything they can to support students, but they need a government that understands the importance of investing in the public education system. If this government can find nearly $2 million for a school serving a small number of students, it should be able to find the resources to ensure no child goes hungry at school.”

Love said this funding decision makes him wonder about what the Education Minister’s long-term strategy is, and whether he is truly committed to advancing publicly funded and publicly delivered K-12 education.

“Mr. Hindley started out as a radio sports announcer and then was Brad Wall’s driver for many years, so I wonder if he has the knowledge and experience to manage such an important and complex system”. “I don’t feel confident he’s got all the skills required.”

Beck’s team is calling on the government to be transparent about the criteria used to provide additional funding to independent schools and to ensure public education and school nutrition remain a priority.

“Saskatchewan families are asking a simple question: where are the government's priorities?” Love said. “Public dollars should be focused on ensuring every Saskatchewan child has access to a strong public education. Saskatchewan literacy rates are getting worse.  One in three students are not reading at grade level by Grade 3.  Every child deserves the kind of small classes and supports that the government is only offering to those who can afford it.”
