SCOTT MOE’S MINISTER SAYS SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS IN HALF OF THE PROVINCE ONLY GET FORENSIC SUPPORTS DURING ‘CORE’ HOURS

Moe Government Refused SHA’s Funding Request for Sexual Assault Supports
PRINCE ALBERT — Carla Beck’s team is calling out Scott Moe’s Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill after he claimed that sexual assault victims in Prince Albert only get forensic supports during “core hours.”

“Anything less than round-the-clock care is unacceptable,” said Jacqueline Roy, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Women’s Health. “Survivors deserve better and so do their communities — and this government is failing them.”

In budget estimates, Cockrill confirmed that Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) services are only available during the “core hours” of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m, despite Statistics Canada indicating that most sexual assaults take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Budget documents leaked to Carla Beck’s team show that the Saskatchewan Health Authority requested a $1.876 million increase for SANE services that the Moe government did not deliver on in the bad news budget.

Prince Albert serves as a critical hub for northern and rural communities, and for any town or city within closer driving distance than Saskatoon in an emergency. With these reductions, survivors may now be forced to travel hours for care or forgo it entirely jeopardizing their health, safety, and ability to pursue justice.

“Let’s be clear: this is not a minor change — this is rejecting funding that will put survivors at risk,” said Roy. “By limiting these services, this government is telling survivors in Prince Albert and across half the province that support can wait. It cannot.”

“This decision shows that Scott Moe and his Minister either don’t understand or are choosing to ignore the severity and urgency of this issue. Neither option is acceptable to Saskatchewan people.

“It’s time for change.”
