SCOTT MOE’S MINISTER DOUBLES DOWN ON FAILURE TO SUPPORT OVERRUN FOOD BANKS, REFUSES TO SEE DAMAGE CAUSED FIRSTHAND

Terry Jenson Cuts Funding, Doesn’t Show Up For His Own Stakeholders
MOOSE JAW – Scott Moe’s bad news budget cuts funding for desperate Saskatchewan food banks — and his Minister won’t even go firsthand to see the damage being done.

The budget, released, last week, eliminates $1 million in funding provided annually to food banks to offset rising costs and growing demand the past two years. The misguided cut comes as food banks report record use.

In response, the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank announced it is being forced to ration how often clients can receive a hamper to once a month. The Moose Jaw facility provides more than 1,000 hampers a month.

On Thursday, Social Services Minister Terry Jenson again rejected any suggestion of harm caused by the cut during Question Period. He also dodged a demand that he go to the Moose Jaw food bank to witness the pressures caused by his cut.

“Scott Moe’s and his minister are willfully ignorant to the record food bank use we’re seeing after 20 years of the Sask. Party,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader. “Newsflash — food bank use is at record highs because you’re failing to make life affordable for Saskatchewan people. In fact, with this bad news budget, Saskatchewan people will pay more when they can least afford it.

“Moe and Minister Jenson should be heading to the Moose Jaw & District Food Bank today to see just how bad things have gotten because of their terrible leadership during this cost-of-living crisis.

Moe has refused to cut the fuel tax and grocery tax this week and continued to defend major increases to power rates and car insurance imposed by the Sask. Party.

One-in-five food bank users in Saskatchewan are employed and nearly four-in-10 are children — the highest rate in Canada.
