SCOTT MOE’S HEALTHCARE DISASTER WORSENS AS SURVEY FINDS SASKATCHEWAN PEOPLE STRUGGLE MOST TO FIND DOCTOR, NOT CONFIDENT IN EMERGENCY CARE

Nearly Two-Thirds Have No Or Little Access To Primary Care, Have No Confidence In Emergency Care
SASKATOON – Shocking new data released Thursday morning found nearly two-thirds of Saskatchewan people have no or limited access to a doctor — the worst rate in Canada — and the same number are not confident they would receive timely care in the event of an emergency.

The figures, released by Angus Reid, reinforce what the Saskatchewan NDP has heard over and over from patients, healthcare workers and experts during its ongoing Your Care, Your Say consultation.

“Healthcare here is worse than it’s ever been — primary care is in crisis, and it lies squarely at the feet of Premier Scott Moe,” said Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Health Shadow Minister.

“He touts a hollow record filled with broken promises while everyday people suffer. Now, Moe’s latest brainwave is to move to two-tier, American-style healthcare so his wealthy friends can skip the line. What exactly is everyone else supposed to do? The answer is to deliver big, bold change and deliver quality public healthcare — and that’s exactly what Carla Beck and a Saskatchewan NDP Government are going to do.”

Angus Reid found:
‎

  • 63 per cent of Saskatchewan respondents reported having no family doctor or difficult access to one.

  • 63 per cent are “not that confident/not confident at all” that they would get care in a timely fashion in the event of a medical emergency.

  • 52 per cent of those requiring an appointment with a specialist said it was impossible, very difficult or difficult to get an appointment

  • 71 per cent said the quality of healthcare in Saskatchewan has deteriorated over the last 10-15 years

“That’s the Sask. Party record — driving healthcare into the ground,” said Jared Clarke, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Rural & Remote Health. “We hear everyday from people in rural Saskatchewan that there is no doctor available close to home and that they can’t rely on the closest emergency room to be open. This is scary and it’s shameful for a government that’s had 18 years to fix healthcare, but has only made it worse every step of the way.

Conway said the crisis in accessing primary care is putting even more pressure on overrun emergency rooms. She said, despite that, the Sask. Party sat on its hands and did nothing when Gardens Community Health Centre in Regina closed in the fall, cutting off access to doctors for 5,000 patients.

“Even though primary care is the foundation of our healthcare system, these guys have stopped trying,” Conway said.

Conway, Clarke, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck and other MLAs have been consulting with frontline healthcare workers and other experts over the last two days in Saskatoon.
