SCOTT MOE POCKETED INCREASED FEDERAL FUNDING FOR HEALTHCARE THAT COULD HAVE GONE TO FRONTLINES

Bad News Budget Won’t Do A Thing To Get Healthcare Out Of Last Place
REGINA – Scott Moe’s bad news budget didn’t even put 80 per cent of the new money received from the federal government for healthcare... to healthcare.

This budget details that the Government of Canada increased the Federal Health Transfer this year by $122 million, but the budget documents reveal that overall healthcare funding in the new budget only increases $24.8 million.

“That means $97.2 million went somewhere else to pay for Scott Moe’s fiscal disaster,” said Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Health Shadow Minister. “Healthcare here is in worse shape than ever — we’re losing doctors, rural emergency rooms close without warning and patients are being left in hospital hallways for days. Still, Scott Moe didn’t even take all the increased money he was transferred from the feds and put it to the overrun frontlines. That is shameful.”

The federal money is desperately needed as Moe and his failed Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill have fallen well short on their plans to recruit healthcare workers. New data shows Saskatchewan has fewer doctors compared to last year and many more are due to retire any day. This week, it was revealed Saskatchewan has signed on just three Americans during a targeted recruitment campaign — the province of British Columbia has recruited more than 400, including 89 physicians, 260 nurses and 42 nurse practitioners.

“Despite his bluster, boasting and bragging, the reality is that Scott Moe is back to standing still, doing nothing while the people of Saskatchewan have the most difficulty accessing a family doctor in the entire country,” said Conway.

Moe’s so-called “Patient First Health Plan” lays out the same goals the Sask. Party committed to in 2012 and 2009 — the government couldn’t even be bothered to come up with a new name for their plan.
“Scott Moe and the Sask. Party have driven Saskatchewan healthcare into the ground and they can’t be trusted to fix it,” Conway said. “It’s time for big, bold change and that’s exactly what Carla Beck’s team intends to deliver.”
