Massive Police, Treatment Investments Need In Coming Provincial Budget
REGINA – Overdoses from toxic drugs shot up to shocking levels in December, according to official data from the Regina Police Service.
SCOTT MOE DOES NOTHING WHILE REGINA SEES MORE THAN 300 DRUG OVERDOSES IN DECEMBER ALONE
There were 323 overdoses reported in the city of Regina in December, a steep jump from 168 the month prior. Fifty-five were attended to by city police. Six deaths from overdose have been reported for the month.
“After nearly 20 years of the Sask. Party, drugs are ravaging our communities, destroying families, and taking far too many lives,” said Betty Nippi-Albright, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Addictions.
“The Sask. Party has not made fixing this issue a priority and it shows clearly in the numbers. We need to start treating this like the crisis it is. We need urgent action now.”
In the previous fall session, Scott Moe’s responsible minister tried repeatedly to block data showing months-long waits for those seeking critical, potentially lifesaving, addictions supports.
“Scott Moe and his Ministers play political games when they should be working day and night to stop these deadly drugs from getting into our communities,” said Nicole Sarauer, Shadow Minister for Corrections and Policing. “We need to put a stop to the gangs preying on people with addictions and we need to get the people suffering real supports as soon as possible.
“We need to see massive investments in policing and mental health and addictions supports in the upcoming budget to get this crisis under control,” Sarauer added.
“It’s time for a change.”
