SASKATOON SEES MASSIVE SURGE IN VIOLENT CRIME AS SCOTT MOE FAILS TO ADDRESS COMMUNITY SAFETY IN BAD NEWS BUDGET

Bad News Budget Wastes Money Covering Moe’s Fiscal Disaster, Instead Of Hiring Police
SASKATOON — Carla Beck’s team is calling out Scott Moe and his Minister for making loads of announcements but failing to deliver on making Saskatoon safer as newly released data shows a massive spike in violent crime in the city.

According to Saskatoon police, there were nearly 400 violent crime incidents in February alone, a 36 per cent increase year-over-year. Assault and theft are also on the rise with 216 cases of assault, 68 incidents of motor vehicles theft, and 90 break-and-enters.

“The frontline officers we do have are doing everything they can, but Scott Moe’s bad news budget fails to address public safety,” said Vicki Mowat, Saskatchewan NDP Deputy Leader. “People are paying so much more but none of that is going to fight crime or address the root causes of crime — it’s going towards covering Scott Moe’s financial disaster.

“His budget spends three times as much to service the debt as it does on policing.”

Saskatoon is not the only community facing a massive crime wave — severe crime provincewide is twice the national average.

Moe promised in the 2024 election campaign to hire more police officers but has produced no evidence of delivering on that commitment. His Community Safety Minister Michael Weger has repeatedly defended the bad news budget despite overwhelming evidence suggesting that crime is going up, not down.

Carla Beck’s team is calling for immediate action to fight crime and tackle the causes of crime, including more support for policing, targeted prevention programs, and expanded mental health and addiction services.

“Saskatchewan used to be a place where you could leave your doors unlocked.” said Mowat. “These massive increases in crime are leaving people afraid in their own communities.”

“It’s time for change.”
