SASKATCHEWAN STEEL WORKERS NEED ACTION AS TRUMP’S TARIFFS PUT JOBS AND INVESTMENT AT RISK

Moe Has Ignored Repeated Calls To Get Back To Work, Pass Bills To Support Workers & Make Life More Affordable
SASKATOON — Carla Beck's team is calling on Scott Moe and the Sask. Party to put forward a concrete plan to protect Saskatchewan steel jobs, support local manufacturers and strengthen the province’s industrial sector.

Her call comes in the wake of the escalating trade war with Donald Trump and the refusal by Moe to get back to work in the legislature, passing legislation to support tariff-impacted workers and make life more affordable for struggling families.

Joining Beck is David Fritz, Chief Operating Officer of Supreme Steel, a major Western Canadian steel fabricator with operations in Saskatoon. Supreme Steel has warned that tariffs are creating challenges on both sides of its business: the company exports fabricated steel to the United States while also relying on certain U.S. steel products that are not readily available from Canadian suppliers.

“Steel workers and manufacturers in Saskatchewan are caught in the middle of a trade war they did not create,” said Carla Beck. “These are good Saskatchewan jobs, and workers deserve to know that their government has a plan to protect them.

“Scott Moe cannot simply tell Saskatchewan people that things are going to get rough. He needs to tell workers and businesses what his government is actually going to do.”

The latest tariffs are adding pressure to an industry already dealing with uncertainty, disrupted supply chains and increased input costs. Supreme Steel has previously said that about 25 per cent of its revenue came from the U.S. market and that some structural steel products it requires must be sourced from American suppliers.

Beck is calling for a Saskatchewan industrial strategy that supports steel and manufacturing workers, strengthens domestic supply chains, prioritizes Saskatchewan and Canadian companies in government procurement, and helps businesses diversify their markets.

“Saskatchewan has the workers, businesses and expertise to build more of what we need here at home,” said Kim Breckner, Shadow Minister for Trade and Export Development. “We need a government that is prepared to stand up for Saskatchewan workers and make sure this province is ready to weather the uncertainty ahead.”

Yesterday, Moe issued a statement on the United States's most recent tariffs measures, stating that: " Our government will continue working to keep our economy strong and steady by expanding our export markets to other countries and working to restore free and fair trade with our largest trading partner, the U.S."

"I'm really struggling to see what actual work is being done by this government to directly support our workers and industry," added Breckner. "I'm standing here in a room full of steel workers who need some real solutions and leadership from the provincial government through tough times that we're facing."

"It's time to get back to work. It's time to recall the legislature so we put forward some solutions. It's time for change."
