SASKATCHEWAN SEES WORST-IN-CANADA RENT HIKES AS PREMIER SIDES WITH BIG CORPORATE LANDLORDS

SASKATOON – Premier Scott Moe today in a speech to realtors came out against the Saskatchewan NDP’s Rent Control Act, siding with big corporate landlords over Saskatchewan’s 300,000 renters.

The Premier’s remarks come as new data show that Saskatchewan continues to see the worst rent hikes in Canada.
“Big corporate landlords from Alberta should not be allowed to jack up rents on Saskatchewan seniors and young people over and over,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader.
“These big corporate landlords are making record profits, and bragging about it, and Scott Moe is still coming to their defense. We need rent control to help make life more affordable for Saskatchewan people.
According to the Rentals.ca December 2025 Report, rent is up 3.9 per cent in Saskatchewan — the highest average increase in Canada. Rents decreased in every other province except for Atlantic Canada, where they rose 1.5 per cent.
Average rents in Saskatchewan have gone up every month for over 40 consecutive months.
According to Statistics Canada, nearly every province that has implemented rent control has seen a greater increase in new housing investments than Saskatchewan, contrary to the arguments of the Sask. Party and big corporate landlords like Boardwalk.
In 2024, there were 4,319 housing starts in Saskatchewan, compared to 7,191 in Manitoba, a province with rent control, the same year. In 2024, Saskatchewan also saw 1,688 fewer housing starts than in the last year of the NDP Government in 2007.

“Too many Saskatchewan people are one rent hike away from ending up on the streets,” said Beck. “This is about building a bright future for everyone that calls this beautiful province home.
“Saskatchewan is like the wild west of big corporate landlords and that needs to end.”
