SASKATCHEWAN NDP TO INTRODUCE EMERGENCY MOTION DEMANDING MOE JOIN CALLS TO END CHINESE EV TARIFFS, SUPPORT FARMERS

REGINA – Today, the Saskatchewan NDP intends to introduce an emergency motion to push the Sask. Party government to finally take a clear position on the issue of Chinese electric vehicle (EV) tariffs.
The Sask. Party Throne Speech was notably silent on EV tariffs, and questions remain about Premier Scott Moe’s position on the issue after he flip-flopped in mid-September and started to claim that scrapping them was “not a simple fix” to the reciprocal canola tariffs.

China’s Ambassador to Canada, however, has confirmed that the tariffs on canola are a direct response to the tariffs on EVs. He says that if the EV tariffs are removed, the canola tariffs would be removed, in turn.

“This is not the time for hesitation or half-measures, not when jobs, farms and entire crush plants are on the line,” said Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck.

“Scott Moe will have a chance later this morning to clearly and unequivocally call on the federal government to scrap the EV tariffs. Restoring market access for canola, pea, and pork producers should be a top priority for his government.”

According to the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities, not a single shipment of canola has been sent from the province to China since the onset of the tariffs.

Statistics Canada figures show merchandise exports from Saskatchewan to China have fallen 35.8 per cent year-to-date and were down 76.5 per cent in August 2025 when compared with August 2024.

“Scrap the EV tariffs — it shouldn't be this hard to say,” said Beck. “Our canola producers deserve to know that they have a future here in Saskatchewan.”
