SASKATCHEWAN NDP, LOCAL BUSINESSES CALL ON PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT TO BRING BACK SKILLED WORKER PROGRAM

REGINA – Small businesses in Saskatchewan are reeling after the Sask. Party government abruptly paused the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP), a move the Saskatchewan NDP wants reversed now.

The SINP helps bring skilled workers to Saskatchewan by fast-tracking their path to permanent residency. With applications now halted — both new and in-progress —employers are scrambling to fill critical job vacancies.

“Our local businesses depend on SINP to keep their doors open,” said Noor Burki, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister of Immigration. “Cancelling this program without any notice hurts our province. The Sask. Party is failing to provide stability for businesses. They are failing all the skilled workers who have done everything right, waited for years, but now can’t make Saskatchewan home.”

Burki wrote Deputy Premier and Immigration Minister Jim Reiter outlining the concerns of small business owners on Feb. 26 and has waited weeks for a response.

Saskatchewan small businesses need certainty and stability, especially when we’re in the middle of a trade war,” said Jobs and Economy Shadow Minister Aleana Young. “This is the worst possible time to break this promise and pull the rug out from under the feet of our local small business owners.”
