SASKATCHEWAN NDP LEADER CARLA BECK STANDS WITH SENIORS TO SPEAK UP ABOUT HORRIFIC LIVING CONDITIONS

Tenants Report Safety And Maintenance Violations, Including Finding A Harpoon In Communal Area
REGINA – Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck joined a group of Regina seniors Monday to demand Scott Moe address the deplorable safety and maintenance issues in provincial government housing.

Images revealed at a news conference showed a gigantic harpoon found in one of the common areas of Mary Helen Herchmer Place, a 55-plus independent senior living home in downtown Regina.

Seniors in the building fear for their safety while Scott Moe and his Ministers sit on their hands and do nothing despite repeated complaints. Tenants have reported forced entries, assaults, and non-residents found passed out in hallways throughout the building. There are also widespread complaints of unsanitary living conditions.

“What a pathetic and sorry excuse for leadership from Scott Moe and his minister”, said Beck. “Seniors who have worked tirelessly to build this province do not deserve to be neglected or an afterthought — and that's exactly what we’re seeing after 18 years of the Sask. Party. It’s time for change.”

Marlene Robins has been a tenant at Mary Helan Herchmer Place for over two years and has organized multiple meetings with representatives from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and still feels as if nothing has changed.

“We have gotten two meetings with the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and not one thing has changed. There is an urgent need for more security cameras around the building but trying to get the government to implement them has been a waste of time,” Robins said.

Doug Pelletier is a resident of Davis Mews senior living complex, and voices similar concerns that he and other tenants experience deplorable safety and maintenance conditions.

“We constantly report the issues that go on at Davis Mews, but little changes. We reported bed bugs on the first floor and it took two weeks for maintenance to come look into it. By that time, they had spread to the third floor. We just want to feel like this government takes our issues seriously and acts on them,” Pelletier said.

Beck pledged that, should the Saskatchewan NDP form the next government, she will invest in public housing and ensure seniors have a seat at the table when discussing matters that affect them and their homes.

“The fact of the matter is that safety and maintenance are table stakes for people living in public housing,” Beck said.

“My message to every person in Saskatchewan is this — you deserve dignity, respect and a government that’s got your back. That’s exactly what I intend to deliver for you.”
